A historically important crop for Kentucky, the state ranks first in the nation for producing burley and fire-cured tobacco. For total tobacco production, Kentucky ranks second in the nation. In 2012, farmers harvested a total of 87,200 acres of tobacco, generating a production value of $ 404.3 million. Meat is also important. Kentucky is home to 1.1 million beef cows and holds the title of largest beef cattle producer east of the Mississippi River and the eighth largest in the nation.
