Casper College is seeking an individual that has a strong knowledge of agricultural operations of hay production, and livestock care. The successful candidate will be self-starting, motivated by excellence and able to successfully operate an agricultural enterprise.

The position of Agricultural and Livestock Specialist manages agricultural production operations of the Casper College Agricultural and Equine Resource Center (CCAERC).

Responsibilities:

The position of Agricultural and Livestock Specialist’s primary responsibilities include production of hay, complete care of livestock, developing and maintaining positive relationships with community members, and supervising work-study students.

Description:

The CCAERC is located 15 miles West of Casper. The total ranch acreage is 167 with 120 irrigated under center pivot. Casper College and community programs enhance student usage of the facility, and the incumbent candidate is expected to contribute as needed in these programmatic efforts.

Essential Duties:

  • Produce, harvest and store all crops
  • Employ best practices related to crop production
  • Maintain and repair all pivot irrigation systems and hay equipment
  • Provide daily health and nutritional care of all livestock
  • Employ best practices related to livestock health and nutritional needs
  • Maintain equine areas in coordination with rodeo program
  • Assist with selecting and purchasing ranch equipment in conjunction with Casper College administration
  • Assist faculty with plans for teaching, research, and service at the CCAERC
  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with students, Casper College employees, and the local community
  • Provide predator control
  • Adhere to established safety guidelines for personal safety and safety of others

Work Environment:

Work is performed both outdoors in a variety of weather conditions and indoors in either a barn, office, classroom, or other various structures under varying room temperatures and lighting conditions. Travel will be required. Work may cause exposure to atmospheric conditions such as dirt, dust, adverse weather conditions and noise levels expected in a normal agricultural environment. Employee works frequently around a variety of livestock and other various ranch/farm animals. Employee will work frequently with students, faculty, staff, community members and student work-study employees.

Physical Demands:

Employee must be able to stand for long periods of time, speak, hear, use hands and fingers to handle materials and use computers, feel, and reach with their hands and arms. Work requires walking and standing for extended periods of time and frequent lifting/moving of up to 100 pounds and moving more with various assistance methods. Work includes use of hands to manipulate both livestock and use tools, equipment, and vehicles. Extensive vehicle and equipment use will be required (agricultural equipment, vehicles, vans, etc.) Work will be performed when needed and at times of crucial attendance, such as harvesting season, when students are present, and any other time of crucial attendance, as deemed by the dean of the School of Science, Ranch Manager, or head Rodeo Coach.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate degree from an accredited institution in agriculture, animal science, range science, or related field. W ork experience may substitute for the education requirement.
  • A minimum of 3 years of work experience directly related to the production of hay and the complete care of livestock.
  • Experience maintaining and operating agricultural equipment and an agricultural enterprise
  • Driver’s license with clean MVR
  • Knowledge of:

Livestock health and nutritional needs

Crop production, best practices

Pivot irrigation systems

Efficient use of agricultural equipment employed in the hay production

Equine facilities

Office technology (computer, productivity software)

Ranch and farm implements and equipment

Repairing various equipment

Grounds keeping

  • Ability to:

Perform duties in a diligent, professional manner

Manage time and communicate effectively

Work with a team and individually

Desired Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in agriculture, animal science, range science, or related field.
  • Experience working in a community college environment
