Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Department of Athletics exists to provide educational and athletic opportunities to young men and women, to provide an environment for student-athletes to learn, advance and excel both academically and athletically, and to serve the interests of the University by complimenting and enhancing its diversity and quality of life. Through its athletic programs, the University seeks to unite alumni, faculty, administration and students in a common shared experience. The governing unit within the Department of Athletics is the Director’s Office, which is the administrative office and clearinghouse for the entire Department of Athletics, and promotes the department’s guiding principle of educating and inspiring through athletics. This unit provides support to administrators, coaches, staff members and student-athletes in order to provide and promote a premier intercollegiate athletic program for The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The Department of Athletics is a highly visible public relations arm of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, with statewide, national and international recognition.

UNC Finley Golf Course is the home of the UNC Tar Heels men’s and women’s golf teams. Our goal is to educate and inspire through athletics. Finley Golf Course Maintenance maintains 100+ acres which include the golf course itself, in addition to the team facilities and the surrounding woodland that adjoins the course. The course is required to meet the NCAA standards. Maintaining the course includes, but not limited to, mowing, irrigation, spraying, fertilizing, and providing the nutrients that is needed to keep a pristine course.

UNC Finley Golf Course is an 18-hole course that provides a venue for coaches, student-athletes, faculty, staff and the Carolina Community to be a part of education, engagement, and provide growth in a diverse environment.

Position Summary
The primary responsibility of this position is to be the sprayer of pesticides, herbicides, and other chemicals on all turf as well as plant beds. This position will be responsible for cultivation, maintenance and promotion of all plants, turf, and plant beds. This includes but not limited to the Chapman Team Facility, Club House grounds, Maintenance Building, all shrubs, and surrounding ornamental beds. This position will require a high level of independence and knowledge of chemical use and application.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Graduation from high school and some experience in horticultural work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Special Licensure or Certification: May require North Carolina Pesticide License; North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Knowledge of different types of plants and their characteristics and maintenance of plants and turfgrass and their specific chemical and nutrient needs.
Knowledge of fungicides, herbicides, insecticides, growth regulators and fertility options in the use of the maintenance of high-end golf facility and clubhouse grounds.
Working knowledge of irrigation theories, troubleshooting maintenance and installations.
Working knowledge of grounds maintenance equipment.
Ability to plan, implement, and landscape underdeveloped areas.
Ability to monitor and inspect turfgrass conditions of a golf course.
Working knowledge of irrigation systems on a golf course.
Ability to lift up to 50lbs.
Valid North Carolina Driver’s License and the ability to obtain a North Carolina Department of Agriculture 031-Public-Pesticide Operator (Federal/State) – Ground License within 60 days of hire date.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Associate’s degree in agriculture and natural resources, greenhouse and grounds maintenance, landscape gardening or closely related field from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Degree in Turf Management preferred but not required.

Special Physical/Mental Requirements
Must be able to lift/move 50 lbs or more. Must be able to manage a fast-paced, high volume environment. Attention to detail essential. Must be able to work weekends as required. May be exposed to extreme weather conditions.
