Small, indoor petting zoo on Manhattans Upper East Side is looking for a flexible and energetic person who enjoys working with children and animals! Our facility gives young children the opportunity to learn about animals through direct contact with live animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs, turtles, lizards, birds, frogs, invertebrates and more. The person hired for this position must maintain a positive and professional demeanor at all times with our visitors.
The candidate MUST be able to work ALL of these shifts each week:
Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays – 9:00-5:00
Saturdays – 7:30am-11:30am
Sundays – 7:30am-11:30am
We hope to add more days in the near future so the candidate MUST be available to work additional hours.
Duties will include, but are not limited to:
Comfortably handle animals and introduce them to children and families.
Teach visitors to safely touch and interact with live animals.
Be a friendly ambassador and closely supervise the interaction between children and animals.
Teach on-site animal themed lessons to students
This position also involves maintaining our animal enclosures to create a clean and healthy environment. Duties will include but are not limited to:
General care of our diverse collection of animals.
Weekly cleaning of our small and large enclosures.
Daily feeding, diet preparation and spot cleaning of cages as directed.
Sweeping, mopping and dusting
The ideal candidate must be able to lift at least 25 lbs, work around animals, dander, dust, various types of substrates for enclosures as well as cleaning with bleach.
This position involves bending, lifting and sitting on the floor with our visitors.
MUST have previous experience caring for small animals in a zoo, nature center, pet store, vet hospital, pet sitting or equivalent field. Or at least have had pets and love animals!
MUST have previous experience with children and the ability to educate in an informal setting since this position will include teaching our animal themed classes and animal demos for our adult and me classes.
Excellent verbal skills and the ability to relate to young children are required since this is a childrens activity center. Must be able to work independently as well as work in a group setting and be able to follow specific directions given by a supervisor including daily checklists and diet protocols.
MUST HAVE AT LEAST A HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA BUT A COLLEGE DEGREE IS PREFERRED.
