The Animal Husbandry and Farm Team Leader will be responsible for carrying out all aspects of animal husbandry operations in accordance with the IACUC protocol, animal welfare act, USDA guidelines, RAPs, company policies and procedures. They will be required to lead a team responsible for the animal husbandry and farm operations across our sheep farm.
A day in the Life:
Responsible for the organization of animal feeding regimes. Includes creating TMR in conjunction with Animal Husbandry Manager and Program Veterinarian to ensure animal feeding regimes are nutritionally appropriate, made according to instructions each day, and fed out correctly by appropriately trained staff.
Lead and organize day to day team to ensure all animal health, animal housing, enrichment, and facilities are acceptable and within acceptable guidelines.
Ensure all routine and non-routine treatments are carried out within appropriate timelines. Ensure non-routine treatments are a first-thing daily priority.
Organize team to ensure daily barn checks/animal housing areas are completed daily with tablet/IFS and any follow up actions are completed and followed through on in a timely manner.
Support and provide oversight with breeding and lambing program as required and in conjunction with management and team.
In conjunction with the Program Veterinarian and management, support or carry out the development, updating, maintaining, implementing policies (SOPs) relevant to Animal Husbandry. Participate in monthly walk-throughs with Program Veterinarian including data preparation and documentation.
Oversee, participate in and carry out routine on-site Veterinary trained and approved euthanasia.
Ensure mortality and barn bedding pack composting is completed when required and within guidelines of RAPS where appropriate.
Organize harvest, including engaging and guiding contractors for all field work or bought in feed. Includes ensuring materials are available to harvesters, all feed is sampled appropriately, meets specification and is entered, tracked and maintained in inventory management system.
Keys to Success:
Education
Bachelors degree in a relevant Animal or Scientific field preferred (e.g. Veterinary Technology, Animal Science, Biology, Agriculture, or other related subject.)
Experience
Minimum 2 years experience in animal care and husbandry required.
Minimum 2 years experience working in a farm or Animal Care environment required.
Previous Supervisory training strongly preferred.
Knowledge and experience with operating farm equipment.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
Excellent communication skills (written and verbal), organizational skills, leadership skills, analytical skills, and attention to detail.
Knowledge and experience with business software applications including MS Office Suite (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel) and virtual communication tools like Microsoft Teams.
Ability to work and lead in a team environment.
Ability to manage time efficiently, organizing work schedules and prioritizing workloads, with little or no input from manager.
Ability to be flexible due to the unpredictable nature of farming including being able and prepared to respond to out of hours emergencies, weather events, or farming requirements. Lambing season flexibility.
Must be physically fit due to the physical nature of this job.
