Job Description
The Desert Research Institute (DRI) is accepting applications for an Assistant Research Scientist in Snow Hydrology or Soil Science within the Division of Hydrologic Science (DHS). The incumbent will contribute to a multi-institute funded project that focuses on the snow-soil interface. Candidates should have a background in snow hydrology, soil science, geotechnical engineering, or numerical modeling of snow or soil processes. We are particularly interested in candidates with a combination of field and modeling experience.
The position will be based at DRIs Reno, NV campus. Travel will be a significant component of the project, and will include travel to field sites, collaborators offices, and conferences. This position is eligible for relocation assistance.
Required Qualifications
Bachelors degree in a relevant field from an accredited institution plus three years experience in environmental research, or a Masters degree in a relevant field.
Experience relevant to the funded project (including but not limited to snow hydrology, snowmelt, heat transfer, soil science, vadose zone hydrology, and numerical modeling).
Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal English communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience planning and executing cold weather field operations.
Experience with deploying, monitoring, and maintaining environmental sensors (especially Campbell Scientific instruments).
Experience collecting, organizing, analyzing and archiving environmental monitoring data.
Demonstrated contributions to written work products (e.g., technical reports, peer-reviewed publications)
Conditioner of Employment
Position requires extensive travel
Ability to work in cold-weather conditions
Ability to safely operate a vehicle in adverse road conditions.
Salary/Benefits
The minimum annual starting salary for the Assistant Research Scientist position is $79,597. Final salary is commensurate with experience and education.. The DRI Human Resources office performs periodic equity reviews to ensure that faculty salaries keep pace with the market. DRI offers a benefits package that includes health, dental, vision, and life insurance. You are 100% vested in the retirement plan on your first day, where your 17.50% contribution is generously matched 1:1 by DRI. Our benefits package also offers 24 annual leave days, a beginning balance of 30 sick leave days, 12 paid holidays, educational benefits, and the choice of three health insurance plans that can be supplemented with non-expiring flexible spending accounts or health savings accounts.
