Job Description
Groundskeeper/Barn Help needed in Canton/Alpharetta for seven-stall barn on on a 22-acre property. Coverage is needed 365 days a year, divided between 2 or 3 employees. Shifts start between 8:30 and 9:00 a.m., and are typically 8 to 10 hours long.
Horse turn-out, stall cleaning, and turn-in is performed 7 days a week Labor Day through Memorial Day. Beginning Memorial Day, barring inclement weather, horses are turned out 24/7, and your focus will turn to maintenance and upkeep of the grounds.
Upon hire, you will be assigned specific days of the week, though you are free to switch days with the other help. You are expected to work on holidays if the holiday falls on your assigned day, though you can work an abbreviated shift for as little as 3 hours, and your are paid double-time on Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Year’s, and time and a half on July 4th.
Duties include, but are not limited to, the following: stall cleaning, driving manure to manure dump site using our tractor, churning the manure pile, turning out and handling the horses using Parelli Natural Horseman techniques (paid training in Parellia techniques is mandatory one day per week), manicuring the grounds around the house and barn, mucking and maintaining pastures, seasonal seeding of pastures, inspecting and repairing broken fences, dragging and maintaining arena, removing weeds from pastures and fence lines, taking and returning 3 trash cans to street weekly for trash removal, mowing around home and entrance, watering outdoor plants in times of drought, making repairs on property, barn and home as needed, pumping water at times from our creek to pastures, maintaining tidiness and sound functioning of barn, property and home with careful attention to detail. Knowledge of how to operate and maintain farm equipment is necessary.
Dependability is a MUST–do not apply if you have other obligations such as small children, other jobs, hobbies or other career aspirations which may interfere with consistent, on-time attendance–the horses’ well-being depends on it! MUST be able to clearly speak and comprehend English for the safety of our animals. You MUST have actualy integrity, a sound mind, and moral character. You MUST love all animals (we own dogs, cats and horses, and do not want anyone working here who it not an animal lover), you MUST be able to follow instruction and be a self-starter that requires little supervision. You MUST have reliable transportation and live within a reasonable commuting distance. Liars, thieves, hunters, know-it-alls and big egos need not apply!
Three professional references are required. Starting pay is at $17 per hour, with a raise to $18 per hour after a 90-day probation period. Regular raises and bonuses are given for outstanding performance. If interested, apply via e-mail.
