Summary:

The Greenacres Agriculture Department offers a farming apprenticeship program for the 2024 season. This paid apprenticeship is a two-year apprenticeship. The Agriculture department comprises a collaborative garden, greenhouse, livestock production, and education teams. The 2024 apprenticeship class will work alongside the Greenacres Farm team to assist in all farm production areas. Overall, interest in organic agriculture and livestock is preferred. In addition to job duties, apprentices will be required to complete an independent project during their apprenticeship at Greenacres. Project ideas will be developed with guidance from their supervisor. This position would be onsite at Greenacres and would be someone who understands our value of Quality, Quality, Quality. Requirements:

  • Able to work independently or with a team.
  • The ability and willingness to operate machinery
  • Outdoor work environment year round using open cab XUV for transportation in all weather conditions
  • Ability to lift 50lbs and move equipment and materials commensurate with the position
  • Must be able to work a weekly schedule of Sunday – Thursday or Tuesday – Saturday with rotating holiday schedule.
  • Able to adjust to the flexible schedule farming can sometimes require.
  • Experience working with Livestock/Animal Care
  • Ability to complete daily chores and health checks for animals including cattle, laying hens, pastured poultry, sheep and hogs
  • Understanding checks of animal infrastructure: fences, water supplies, and available forage.
  • Use proper animal handling techniques
  • Assist with moving animals in pasture rotations and haying
  • Facilitate and support education programs run on or about the farm.
  • Compassion and patience with animal handling.
  • Apprentice must be prepared to work in a professional environment, complete tasks carefully and in a timely manner. Interns must be prompt, responsible and focused.
  • Willingness to reach across agricultural disciplines to learn about crop production at Greenacres
  • Research project completion and presentation
  • Valid driver license and pass screening by Greenacres auto insurance carrier to drive Greenacres vehicles required
  • Ability to work full time (40 hours per week) and additional overtime hours as needed
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Ability to successfully pass a post-offer pre-employment drug test and fingerprint FBI background screen
