Farm Program Educator
The mission of The Cibolo Center for Conservation is to promote the conservation of natural resources through education and stewardship. We provide programming for children, adults and families while protecting critical natural areas. The organization manages 160-acres of Texas Hill Country land in the growing community of Boerne, Texas, and welcomes over 100,000 visitors each year.
JOB SUMMARY
The Farm Program Educator will implement programs to create a vibrant community experience where people come together to learn about connecting to the land, sustainable gardening, and various programs related to the Herff Farm. This position will coordinate and implement our Deep Roots program, Gardening 101, our Inspiration Garden, the Chicken Program, Herff House tours and others as it relates to the farm. The Education Coordinator will also support the continued growth of Herff Farm’s vibrant Farmers Market which has produce and artisan vendors that promote the Cibolo commitment to sustainable living and access to locally grown and organic food. As needed, this position will support special events and educational programming that inspire community connections to Herff Farm and the Cibolo mission. This position is a Tuesday-Saturday position.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Program Management and Execution (35%)
- Design and lead the Deep Roots program for youth at Meadowlands to include creation of education programs while providing RMYA and Meadowlands students will deep-learning opportunities in the Gardening, Sustainability, Entrepreneurship and Outdoor Recreation
- Work in conjunction with the Volunteer Coordinator to train Herff House docents to lead tours on Saturdays
- Design and implement our Chicken Program while teaching visitors about sustainable practices with backyard chickens
- Work with volunteers to organize and implement garden programming in the Teaching Garden and the Inspiration Garden
- Design a course syllabus to teach students about the ecosystem and life cycles present on the farm for a deeper understanding of the whole system
- Evaluate and modify programs seasonally in response to participant and community feedback
Garden Planting and Maintenance (35%)
- Create a welcoming and beautiful space for RMYA Deep Roots program within the Herff Farm Teaching Garden assigned space
- Create and manage a garden program with the assistance of the Garden Manager to educate students how to garden, support sustainable and healthy food consumption, and to bring people together for connection and wellness
Staff and Volunteer Maintenance (15%)
- Work with volunteers, and interns to assist in program delivery and teaching garden maintenance
- Assist Herff Farm teaching garden and Herff Farm workdays through relationship development with volunteers or groups in conjunction with the Volunteer Coordinator
- Create a culture of positive enthusiasm for learning among the staff, volunteers, interns and program participants
Organizational Leadership and Support (10%)
- Work with the Farm Programs Director to maintain a program budget and project program revenue
- Help manage volunteer and intern participation and hours and attendance
- Meet regularly with Farm Program Director and other Cibolo leadership and staff to coordinate programs and meet goals
Support Across Organization (5%)
- Support the Education Department as needed for program support such as field trips, camps, children’s education, and nature education programs
- Support Cibolo in shared initiatives such as Member events, Gala, Nest Nature School, restoration events, community science efforts, and other programs and events as needed.
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE NEEDED
- Passionate about connecting people to nature and gardening
- Proven performance of successful work in the field of education and/or agriculture
- Proven management skills to develop staff and volunteers
- Exhibits a strong desire to work with a diverse audience of program guests
- Experience in farm education programs
- Ability to build strong professional relationships and partnerships
- Creative, flexible, innovative self-starter who likes a challenge
- Ability to foster a collaborative team-work environment
- Ability to prioritize and handle multiple projects/tasks and manage groups and activities
- Supports positive community-building inside and outside the Cibolo team
- Excellent organization skills and attention to detail
- Employment is contingent on fingerprinting and a clear background check.
WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The position will typically work 40 hours per week year-round. The position is primarily Tuesday—Saturday. However, some weekends or evenings may occasionally be required for family events, staff meetings, or training opportunities. Due to the outdoor format of the school, the Farm Program Educator must have the ability to work outdoors in all seasons and weather conditions. They must also have the ability safely navigate a variety of surfaces, walk long distances, stand for extended periods of time, sit, kneel, stoop, crawl, twist, reach above head, climb stairs or ramps, lift, carry up to 50 lbs.
