Job Description

The Farm Supervisor will oversee the Stockbridge-Munsee Community produce farm and community gardens. This position is responsible for maintaining six acres of produce including thirty kinds of produce and indigenous crops.

The Farm Supervisor will guide the tribe in sustainable farming practices and overall management of agriculture projects and future expansions. This position will report to the Agriculture Manager.

 

DUTIES:

  • Develops and implements a production management plan consistent with sustainable standards to achieve harvest goals for vegetables, fruit, and traditional foods.
  • Schedule harvest goals, crop selections, plans for rotations and sequencing of plantings, cultivation, pest and disease management, harvesting, and soil fertility.
  • Create and maintain all budgets for successful business and growing seasons with Ag Manager.
  • Place orders for seed and farm supplies. Research and order tools and farm equipment in accordance with budget.
  • Cultivation activities, hand and machine powered.
  • Oversee insect and weed control management, fertility monitoring, and general field observation, and nutrient management.
  • Oversee harvest and post-harvest handling of produce with safe food handling practices.
  • Develop educational content for in person and online learning regarding food production.
  • Manage seasonal employees for the farm, including scheduling, training, and overseeing daily duties.
  • Must have a strong work ethic, be well organized, a self-starter, and have time management skills.
  • Must have the ability to adapt to changes, delays, or unexpected events in the work environment and the ability to prioritize tasks and change methods to best fit the situation.
  • Must be reliable and prompt when reporting to work.
  • Required to attend job related, in-service, meetings, and training to maintain professional and technical knowledge.
  • Must adhere to tribal law and other applicable laws as well as tribal personnel policies and procedures.
  • May be required to satisfactorily complete an exam or other testing requirement(s) to determine skill proficiency.

STANDARD QUALIFICATIONS:

All employees of Stockbridge Munsee Community must meet the following qualification:

  • Must submit to and pass a pre-employment drug and health screening. Must adhere to the Tribe’s Drug and Alcohol Free Workplace Policy during the course of employment.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age, unless otherwise stated on job description.
  • Must maintain an acceptable departmental attendance record.
  • Must be able to work weekends, nights, and holidays.
  • Must obtain and maintain Elder/Youth License as stated on job description.
  • Must be COVID 19 fully vaccinated and remain up to date with required doses.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must have a bachelor’s or associates degree, with preference in the field of Agriculture, Horticulture, or related field.
  • Must have two years’ experience in vegetable production.
  • Familiar with tractors, irrigation, cover cropping, and pest management using organic methods.
  • Experience with farm record keeping and using Microsoft Excel preferred.
  • Experience with farm equipment.
  • Experience with beekeeping preferred.
  • Must have excellent communication and leadership skills.
  • Machine maintenance preferred.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and insurance are required. Must obtain a Wisconsin driver’s license within 30 days of employment if applicant has an out-of-state driver’s license. Must meet and maintain the eligibility to operate a personal or tribal vehicle under the driver acceptability guidelines as established by Mohican Nation Insurance.
  • Must obtain food handler safety certification.
  • Must obtain sprayer applicators license.
  • Must be willing to attend all applicable training.
  • Must be eligible for coverage under the employer’s liability insurance.
  • Must have demonstrated ability to maintain satisfactory working record in any prior or current employment.
  • Must abide by departmental and organizational safety, testing, and uniform guidelines.
  • Must be able to meet physical requirements of position

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

 

  • This position requires a lot of sitting with occasionally stoop, kneel, crouch, and lift and/or move up to fifty (50) pounds.
  • Evening and/or weekend is required. Extended hours and irregular shifts may be required.
  • Work environment requires excellent personal hygiene due to working in close proximity to others and in an enclosed area.
  • A Tuberculosis (TB) Screening and/or TB Skin Test may be required.
