Cornell University Agricultural Experiment Station is seeking a Farm Supervisor to lead the operation of a 400 acre research farm used primarily for agricultural crops, mainly focusing on corn, soybeans, and small grains.

The farm Supervisor:

  • Supervises 1 farm staff and seasonal temp employees
  • Oversees the farm’s equipment and vehicles to ensure they are properly maintained and in good operating condition at all times
  • Assesses the condition of farm infrastructure, such as field tile, roadways, irrigation, fencing etc. and directs maintenance and improvement as needed
  • Prioritizes, schedules, assigns, and ensures the completion of work requests from Cornell’s researchers
  • Performs field work to support the staff as needed
  • Identifies training and development needs within the farm staff and facilitates their continued professional growth
  • Partners with station leadership and faculty to strategically plan farm operations and infrastructure improvements, and to ensure Cornell AES’s continued role as a world leader in agricultural research
  • Ensures responsible farm operations in compliance with federal, state, and local laws/regulations, Cornell Environmental Health and Safety guidelines, and college and university requirements including infectious disease protocols

Must haves:

  • Associates degree in Agriculture, Horticulture, or closely related field with 3 – 5 years of experience with agricultural research or equivalent combination; or certification from a technical school, trade school or specialized training with 6 – 8 years of experience in farm management and operations
  • Knowledge of best management practices for crop, soil, and pest management and other sustainable agricultural practices
  • Previous work experience operating a variety of farm equipment
  • Proven success as a team leader in a supervisory role
  • Proficiency with standard computer applications (e.g. Microsoft suite)
  • Ability to assess farm infrastructure conditions (field tile, drainage ditches, irrigation, roadways, fencing etc.) and direct needed maintenance
  • Experience and proven success operating within a budget
  • Excellent communication skills: speaking and writing
  • Proven ability to build and sustain positive and collaborative working relationships
  • Certified Pesticide Applicator license with at least 2 years of proven applications being performed (category 1A or 3A)

Preferred:

  • Leadership development training
  • BS degree in agriculture
  • NYS CDL
  • OSHA forklift operator certified
  • Knowledge of and experience with research farm goals and methodology
  • Experience with GPS-based technology as applied to farm operations
  • Experience with farm management software

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $56,345.00 – $65,481.00 per year
