Where the Chemistry Happens

The Vegetable Seeds Research and Development (R&D) Farm Organization develops and maintains the global R&D Farm sites, providing diverse growing environments from open fields to high-tech greenhouses, that allow the R&D Breeding and Research units to realize their strategic objectives cost-effectively and support the operational needs of Operations and Marketing & Sales, where applicable.
Farm Foreman is responsible to manage crop growing, performing agronomical operations and all related activities supporting Research & Development (R&D) and Production functions located at the Esparto, CA site and other functions where applicable as required, with adequate competent manpower resources and readily available pool of seasonal/contracted labor. Working within compliance with global BASF Responsible Care (RC) and local governmental regulations regarding labor contracting, hygiene, Health Safety and Environmental (HSE) and stewardship.
Being part of the Farm Team, will contribute to developing and implementing farm site and technology innovation strategy (e.g., digitalization) that anticipates the evolving needs of the Vegetable Seeds R&D function.

As a Farm Foreman you create chemistry by…

Monitors and manages the people involved in crop management on the Farm. Procures seasonal/contracted needed for execution. Coordinates all aspects in the execution of the crop management Establishes a strong constructive relationship with internal clients through regular discussions and field visits to ensure optimal use of services and participate in regular client satisfaction surveys. Ensures that Farm protocols and work practices at site conform to global HSE, RC implementation standards, Hygiene and Stewardship policies and local laws and regulations. Ensures all safety and hygiene procedures are followed and have input in their future development. Manages the maintenance and acquisition of resources related to all Farm Equipment and Supplies Participates in the planning and monitoring of Farm OpEx budget. Proactively communicates gaps between planned activities vs. realized output.

Qualifications – BASF recognizes institutions of Higher Education which are accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or equivalent

Education

High School diploma with 5+ years of relevant experience (related to specific Agriculture Crop Growing)
OR

Bachelor’s degree with minimum 3 years of relevant experience (related to specific Agriculture Crop Growing)

Experience

Experience in coordinating a team, farm planning and project oversight Proven communicator with solution-oriented approach Fluent in English with a preferred for fluent Spanish as well Relevant understanding of HSE principles, oversight and regulations Detail orientated, comfortable communicating and performing in a diverse team Innovative mind set able to match company strategy Builds and enhances trust as a collaborator and partner

Knowledge/Skills

Strong digital/technical skills including computer skills Knowledge on farm equipment operation and maintenance Knowledge on crop protection (e.g. pest control) measures and application Knowledge on field irrigation and plant nutrition principles Basic knowledge of seed production preferred Solid understanding and demonstrated knowledge on crop growing concepts Demonstrated knowledge on farm safety principles Occasionally assist with heavy physical tasks related to farm equipment
