Job Description

Duties

Utilize a variety of materials, tools, and equipment associated with the landscape maintenance.
Use technical knowledge to adjust and make necessary repairs on computer-controlled Irrigation Systems.
Perform minor repairs on park furnishings benches, picnic tables, grills. Service and maintain trails and roads in safe conditions.
Perform routine maintenance at different sites and visitor facilities, to include cleaning restrooms, trash collect, graffiti abatement.
Operates gasoline and diesel powered tractors up to 70 H.P. Tractors are field/farm type with towed or attached equipment such as rotary and flail, augers, tillers, backhoe etc.
Perform other duties such as directing volunteer groups, assisting with large pruning projects or irrigation system repairs.

Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
If you do not currently possess a valid Qualified Applicator’s Certificate (QAC) issued by the California State Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR) you will be required to obtain the certification within 6 months of entrance on duty date.
You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver’s license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator’s License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver’s licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work Full Time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

This announcement may be used to fill additional positions if identical vacancies occur within 90 days of the issue date of the referral certificate. A Recruitment Incentive May Be Authorized for a newly selected employee when appointed to a permanent, temporary, or term position. A Federal employee who is transferring to the National Park Service from another component, bureau or Federal agency and who does not meet the conditions under 5 CFR 575.102 is not eligible for a recruitment incentive.
A Relocation Incentive May Be Authorized for a Federal employee when the employee must move, as directed by the National Park Service (NPS) either through a management directed reassignment or selection for employment, to a different location at least 50 miles away from the one where his/her position of record held at time of selection is currently located, due to a need of the NPS. A relocation incentive is not the same as a Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move and, as such, may be granted in conjunction with one another.
Physical Demands: Work requires frequent walking, standing, pushing of carts and wheelbarrows bending, and stooping. Climbs ladders to trim and/or prune trees. Frequently lifts heavy objects such as bags of fertilizer grass seed, etc. May work from an aerial lift. The gardener will use power equipment such as mowers, aerators, hedge trimmers, etc. When motor vehicle or tractor operator duties are performed moderate effort is exerted to manipulate equipment controls.
Working Conditions: Work is done outside or in a greenhouse. In working outside, the gardener is subject to discomfort from long periods in the hot sun, and sometimes to chilly or rainy weather. In some instances the conditions will involve working in air contaminated with chemical dust and sprays being used on trees and shrubs. Will be required to wear protective clothing during pesticide/herbicide application; as well as, normal safely items such as gloves, boots, glasses, etc. Because of the duties performed, the incumbent is subject to minor injuries such as cuts, scratches, bruises, and scrapes. There is occasionally the possibility of more serious injury. When vehicles are operated there is additional exposure to risk due to traffic accidents.

The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework only during an emergency or natural disaster.
