Job Description

We seek an individual to take on a variety of farming, building and land maintenance and improvement tasks as well as some horse care for 40 hours per week.

The position requires working independently and the candidate must have strong common sense along with a broad skill set, while also being detail oriented and adhering to safety precautions.

This is a labor-intensive job with requirements to be outside the majority of the time, working in all weather. Most of the duties involved require good communication skills, active listening, and determination to accomplish tasks as they can be tiring due to the involvement of physical work. The working conditions are diverse, and the tasks will vary through the seasons and situations.

The right candidate loves horses, is mature with a high attention to detail, excellent time-management skills, and the ability to work with a team and/or with minimal supervision. Experience working with large farm equipment and around horses is necessary.

Position to start between June 1-30. Applicants will be required to perform a paid trial period to make sure they can handle the duties.

Some holidays required, with ability to coordinate holiday coverage with colleagues. Holidays will be shorter shifts to take care of the basic needs of the horses.

We operate a private, family-owned pony farm located outside Nashville, TN. We have a strong focus on horse care, safety and well being as we seek to produce high-quality ponies for children.

Our property includes approximately 200 acres of woods, 100 acres of horse pasture and 100 acres of hay fields with several barns and outbuildings. Currently, we have 55 ponies and horses of all ages under our care.

Job Types: Full-time. This position will be considered Temp to Hire after 90 days.

Duties:

  • Maintain pastures and lawns including mowing, weed-wacking, bush-hogging, seeding, and rotating horses.
  • Regular inspection and repair of fences, building new fencelines as needed. This includes electric fences which must be tested daily.
  • Monitor property, including wooded area.
  • Participate in hay cutting, bailing and storage process which is led by an independent contractor twice a year.
  • Muck out stalls in 8-stall barn.
  • Handle ponies and horses, including moving horses on a lead, holding horses during veterinary/ farrier care and breeding.
  • Feed horses grain, hay, and any supplements.
  • Monitor well-being of horses daily for illness and injury.
  • Provide basic medical care to horses at the direction of veterinarian or other colleagues, including worming, provision of medication and wound care.
  • Water horses and maintain farm watering system, including breaking ice and unhooking water hoses in cold weather and cleaning troughs regularly.
  • Control pests on property and in buildings (rodents, insects).
  • Compost manure, bedding, and other organic materials.
  • Maintain buildings on property.
  • Build small structures, including sheds (depending on previous experience).
  • Actively participate in monthly planning meetings with other farm personnel.
  • Update electronic farm maintenance records.
  • Other farm duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • Varied work experience preferably in farming, grounds, general maintenance, and/or construction.
  • Ability to operate various hand tools, power tools and machinery (tractors, bush hog, mowers, chain saw, etc).
  • Ability to repair equipment.
  • Experience with horses a plus.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both written and orally in English.
  • Basic computer skills: Ability to use email, internet, electronic calendars, etc.
  • Ability to regularly lift, push, or pull a minimum of 50 lbs .
  • Ability to reach, crouch, kneel, bend, walk, or stand for long periods of time.
  • Ability to drive any type of vehicle or machinery as needed including with attachments (bush hog, seeder, horse trailer, etc.)
  • Ability to respond to emergencies on property or involving horses.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Applicants will be subject to a background check and credit as a condition of employment and will be required to provide references.

Schedule:

  • Day shift
  • 5 days a week (Tuesday-Saturday)
  • Hours may need to shift in case of an emergency
