The Ranch operations consist of 2000+-acres, with an average of 200 – 250 cattle head, year-round and has 300+ acres of irrigated/dry land, hay and pastures. The Ranch Manager reports directly to Caleb Holland and is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the ranch.
Job Responsibilities: The Ranch Manager will oversee staff, develop daily and weekly workplans to ensure the daily ranch operations run smoothly. As the Ranch Manager you will be responsible for soil management and crop production, including irrigation, use of herbicides, pesticides and fertilizers. The candidate must have an in-depth knowledge and background in both rotational grazing and set stocking rates. The individual must be able to identify forage growth rate and grazing needs. The Ranch Manager will need to understand and be able to repair irrigation systems, canals and pipelines. An understanding of genetics is crucial to ensure the longevity and health of the herd. It is also important that the Ranch Manager understands what is working for others in the region to ensure that we are using the best practices. They should also understand bull genetics and how to raise cow calves, to capture genetics, one must understand its relationship to managing forages. At any given time, there can be up to 250 cattle in this operation. This includes bulls and a cow/calf operation.
Knowledge of Marketing: The Ranch Manager must have knowledge and understanding of livestock and commodities market. The ability to market livestock 9-to-10 months in advance. Must be able to coordinate and create innovative marketing strategies.
Predator Control: With the calving operation, predator control is a must. Management of our predator control procedures and coordination with federal programs and local operations is an important element of protecting the operation.
Communication Skills: It is important that the Ranch Manager be able to communicate with the employees, contractors, vendors, buyers, and neighbors to ensure a good working relationship. Mechanical Knowledge: Some working knowledge is a benefit to this position. The Ranch Manager needs to be able to understand the equipment necessary for an operation of this size and have some knowledge of purchasing, repair and servicing of farm equipment.
The successful candidate will understand the need for marginal analysis in the operation and have a basic understanding of bookkeeping and accounting. He/she must be able to research and purchase supplies at minimum cost and for the correct volume. The Manager must also be able to hire, develop and evaluate employees.
It is critical that the Ranch Manager has a sense of ownership of the ranch and a sense of pride in building and accomplishing a successful ranch.
