Research & Development Plant Science Manager, Biosciences

Where will you work: Onsite – Durham, NC (100 Capitola Drive, Suite 305, Durham, NC 27713)

The Research & Development Plant Science Manager, Biosciences will lead and manage the greenhouses, growth chamber environments, and a small team of research associates evaluating biological and fertilizer technologies for agriculture.

This role includes hands-on management of plant growth environments, conducting research and product development studies, and directly managing a small team of research associates. Expertise in plant care, plant growth environments, management experience, as well as plant and microbiology skills are expected. Seeking a candidate with excellent communication, strong organizational, and scientific skills. The Research & Development Plant Science Manager, Biosciences will work collaboratively, hands-on, with a small, in-person team, to study and develop innovative agricultural solutions.

What you’ll do?

Manage a small team of Research Associates conducting plant research and product development studies in various growth environments and the lab.

Manage with a strong safety culture and compliance with all EH&S requirements.

Design or use existing equipment to run the greenhouses.

Select and manage growth chamber environments.

Grow and conduct studies with row and specialty agriculture crops.

Maintain the growth environments to ensure quality and consistent environments and plants.

Act as primary point-person for continual operation of growth environments.

Work with the broader Research and Development team, conduct studies on biological and fertilizer solutions for agriculture.

Collect plant, soil, and environmental measurements to measure prototype and product efficacy.

Synthesize results from studies by providing oral and written reports.

Interpretation of results and data generation are to follow the highest quality, integrity, and compliance standards.

What you’ll need:

A bachelor’s degree in plant biology, botany, soil science, agronomy, biology, or microbiology is required.

Minimum of 2 years of management experience.

Minimum of 2 years of experience working in greenhouse and growth environments and managing plant care.

Skills as a leader of a small team, including hiring.

Highly skilled in plant care.

Demonstrated ability to manage plant growth environments.

Knowledge of and training in good experimental design and basic statistics.

Experience collecting various types of plant measurement data, using a variety of tools and techniques.

Strong support of safety culture and EH&S compliance.

Physical requirements: ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs; ability to sit, stand, or kneel as needed; ability to work outdoors, in the lab, in production environments, in greenhouses, and around plants, microbes, and soil.

Critical thinking and willingness to share point of view.

Ability to present and write research findings.

Organizational and project management skills.

Proactive, transparent, and strong attention to detail.

Ability to work independently with limited supervision.

Highly motivated, creative, and organized.

Ability to work across functions and lines in a matrix environment.

Bonus if you have the following:

Master’s degree in plant biology, botany, soil science, agronomy, biology, or microbiology

Experience in biotech and/or agriculture companies (biotechnology, fertilizers, crop protection, seeds, etc.).

Experience with PowerBI, Microsoft PowerApps, SmartSheet
