Required Minimum Qualifications: Bachelors degree and 5 years of related experience

Ph.D. in genetics or plant breeding, plus 2 years of research experience after obtaining Ph.D.
Outstanding record in leading scientific research that results in publications in high-impact journals.
Documented graduate training and research in quantitative genetics, statistical genetics, and genomics.
Comprehensive knowledge of plant breeding, statistics, quantitative genetics, and genomics.
Demonstrated ability in designing experiments, collecting high quality data, and conducting data analysis with R, SAS, or other statistical packages.
Extensive experience in genomic selection, genome-wide association study, QTL mapping, genotype x environment interaction, and machine learning.
Experience in data management, data analysis, and computer simulation.
Research experience in multiple field crops including maize, rice, wheat, soybean, or sorghum.

Summary
Quantitative Genetics and Maize Breeding program in the Department of Agronomy, Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa, is seeking a Research Scientist to lead innovative research in complex trait dissection and prediction.
The core responsibilities of this position is to 1) design and implement complex trait dissection and prediction strategies to leverage genetic design, experimental design, optimization thinking, and artificial intelligence to uncover patterns hidden in genetics, environment, and genetics-environmental interplay; 2) design the plant breeding methods to make better use of genetic resources, high throughput sequencing, high throughput phenotyping, and advanced tools in data mining and machine learning; and 3) design and implement experiments and analytical approaches to uncover genes underlying complex traits and their dynamic effects at different environmental conditions.
Example of Duties
Develops, designs and conducts one or more complex research projects of high complexity, reviews progress and evaluates results.
Formulates research methods and suggests options for improving quality, identifies potential problems, recommends and implements solutions, and collaborates in the development of new techniques.
Acts as a co-author and may act as a principal investigator.
Recommends program direction.
Trains users in equipment operation and laboratory techniques, explains and demonstrates technology and equipment capabilities, operations, limitations and outcomes.
Coordinates data collection and screening and verifies the data.
Conducts analysis of data, interprets and implements research methodology based on outcome of analysis.
May supervise a small work group.

Applies senior-level professional knowledge and expertise to work requiring greater latitude
Solves moderately complex problems and regularly exercises judgment to determine appropriate action
Regularly exercises judgment to resolve problems and determine appropriate action on a broad set of issue and problems. May provide recommendations regarding problems/issues outside the bounds of defined procedures and practices
Responds to complicated inquiries, provides training, and provides direction to lower-level staff
May provide supervision for one to two other staff (i.e., leads a small work team)
May lead projects for which well-defined practices and procedures may not exist
Provides guidance to students
