POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
Breeding Assistant
The California Cooperative Rice Research Foundation, a non-profit grower owned foundation established in 1912, is seeking arice Breeding Assistantto develop improved rice cultivars in an aggressive and goal-oriented rice breeding program. The position is located at the Rice Experiment Station, 955 Butte City Highway, Biggs, California 95917-0306, which is approximately 65 miles north of Sacramento, California.
Qualifications: Individuals with a college degree in an agriculture related field is preferred but not required. Individuals should have good written and oral communication skills, an ability to work cooperatively with others, and the ability to supervise temporary employees. Experience with agricultural field research equipment, greenhouse, laboratory equipment, and computers is beneficial; however, training will be provided. Ability to lift 50 to 80 pounds and work in hot outdoor and greenhouse conditions is required.
Major Responsibilities: Individual will primarily assist plant breeders in research of the rice plant breeding program. Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to, plot layout, seed processing, irrigation, planting, plot maintenance, pesticide applications, data collection and entry, and harvest of rice field and greenhouse nurseries. Duties require physical exertion in rice field environment and use of pesticides. Specific duties include operating light tractors, pesticide sprayers, combines, forklifts, grain processing equipment, laboratory equipment, and computers for data entry, and maintenance of field and greenhouse research areas including planting, fertilizing, weeding, harvesting, processing seed, laboratory milling and cleanup of facilities. Individual will need to be able to work cooperatively as part of a plant breeding team and with the casual labor crew.
Other requirements: Employee must have a valid drivers license and be available for domestic travel to off-station research locations and the breeding nursery located in Hawaii.
