Job Description
We are hiring Seasonal Farm Hands to help us with our FIFTH Spring/Summer/Fall season at the Tree House Orchard & Farm Fermentory. We want you to help us cultivate and nourish the property to be able to provide unique, local produce and ingredients for our products as well as assist in our Orchard to bear appreciable and beautiful terroir-filled fruit for our wild and mixed fermentation beer and cider program.
This is an exciting opportunity for Ag students, budding arborists and those looking to get their hands dirty in the farming industry.
Farm tasks predominantly feature all aspects of produce farming like greenhouse seeding, seedling care, transplanting, irrigation, weeding, pest management, harvesting, washing, processing, and anything and everything that contributes to a positive, fruitful outcome for the Farm. Orchard tasks feature responsibilities like pruning, harvesting, seeding, seedling care, transplanting, irrigation, weeding, pest management, washing, processing, and anything and everything that contributes to a positive, fruitful outcome for the Orchard. There is a customer service element to this role, with 8-12 hours per week dedicated to selling our produce and ciders to guests who visit the property during our retail hours.
Our seasonal Farm Hands will receive an immersive experience in the running of a small, community-focused Farm & Orchard, working closely with our Farm Manager and the rest of the team.
We see this as being an enriching opportunity for the right individual as farming is physically demanding, happens in all kinds of weather, during very early, long hours and can be tedious and repetitive yet exceptionally rewarding. Strength (can lift 50 pounds), stamina (both physical and mental), speed, and efficiency are all traits that make a successful farmer. But we also value intent, hard work, a sense of humor, and good communication skills.
About you:
We are seeking apprentices who are self-directed, curious, and passionate about learning how to farm. The ideal candidate is a scrappy, hard worker who embraces the rewarding, albeit physically challenging, work that comes with farming and who works well both on a team and on their own and those who. Preference is given to people who have prior experience in farming, gardening, or landscaping.
About the gig:
You’ll be working both indoors and out on an ongoing list of projects and tasks as assigned by our Farm Manager and Lead. This is a full-time schedule with flexible, long shifts and that include early mornings, evenings, and weekends as needed for some retail responsibilities of our cider and produce. This is a 3-4-month seasonal role beginning in the spring and goes through to the summer.
At Tree House, we work as a team and we work very hard. . . with purpose and intent. We do not cut corners and we do not take the easy route. We encourage dissent, critical thinking, and an ongoing desire to improve. Our goal is to make the best beverages in the world and serve it in the most friendly and memorable environment possible – that is our obsession, and that is what drives us to do what we do.
