This position will be responsible for protecting New Mexico’s livestock from loss, theft, injury and disease by conducting inspections to ensure ownership and health in accordance with Chapter 77.2 and NMAC 21.30.
How does it get done?
- Inspect livestock to verify ownership by identifying brands, tags, tattoos or paint markings and issuing the proper transportation certificates
- Inspect imported livestock and health certificates to insure compliance with NM livestock regulations
- Inspect livestock for visible signs of infectious and contagious disease
- Investigate reports and/or complaints of trespassing, missing/stolen or inhumane treatment of livestock and prepare reports of investigative findings
- Prepare reports and maintain records and logs of inspections, monies received, livestock movement, sales, inventories of expenses, materials used and activity schedules
- Assist state and federal regulatory agencies and NMLB staff in conducting investigations involving health violations, health inspections, quarantines, and health data
- Conduct specialized livestock inspections, investigations and law enforcement activities in assigned district. This will include, but is not limited to, presenting evidence of violations at the magistrate level; maintaining certification from law enforcement agency; investigating inhumane treatment of livestock and preparing seizure warrant at magistrate level and criminal complaint for prosecution of violators
- Patrols designated area; conducts vehicle road stop activity; issues citations, files complaints and/or arrests violators of NM Livestock laws and regulations
- Provides court testimony in criminal and/or civil livestock cases; assists other law enforcement agencies in their capacity of a law enforcement officer, as well as in livestock incidents
Salary
$21.86 – $32.79 Hourly
$45,468 – $68,202 Annually

This position will serve the industry in District 17.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have experience working with livestock and controlling large groups of large animals in a relatively confined space, experience working in agriculture and experience working in ranching.
Minimum Qualification
High School diploma or Equivalent and four (4) years of livestock, agriculture, law enforcement related experience, and/or direct experience as it pertains to the essential duties and responsibilities of this classification. Current certification as a commissioned Law Enforcement Officer issued by the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy or obtain Law Enforcement Certification within one year of date of hire is required.

Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment. Pre-employment background investigation is required and is conditional pending results. This position is safety sensitive and requires pre-employment and random drug tests. Transfer to other locations around the state may be required. Working Conditions
State of New Mexico employees may be impacted by the Public Health Order dated December 19, 2022, which requires facilities licensed or certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (“CMS”), including all hospital types, long-term care facilities, nursing homes, hospice facilities and rehabilitation facilities, as well as assisted living facilities and adult day care settings, to adhere to all COVID-related requirements prescribed by CMS, including, but not limited to masking and staff vaccination.
This position requires working with and around livestock, conducting investigations, road stops and issuing citations. The duties involve frequent standing, bending, lifting, sitting and driving a state vehicle. Work is performed outdoors in inclement weather, dangerous situations, with heavy lifting of 50 or more pounds. Erratic seasonal hours. Schedule may require weekend and holiday work.
