Job Description

*Ranch Hand / Maintenance and Grounds*

*Position Overview*

Emerald Hills Ranch is looking for a dependable, hands on Ranch Lead to help oversee ranch maintenance, grounds work, repairs, and property improvement projects at our horse boarding facility in Winters, CA.

We are a private horse boarding ranch caring for approximately 40 horses on a large ranch property. This position is best suited for someone who is practical, reliable, physically capable, comfortable working outdoors, and able to lead a small team while also doing the work alongside them.

This is a hands on leadership position. The right person must be willing and able to work side by side with staff, not just supervise from a distance.

The Ranch Lead will work closely with ownership and another assistant manager focused more on daily horse care and barn operations. Together, these roles help keep the ranch safe, clean, efficient, and well maintained.

Ownership provides overall direction and management, while the Ranch Lead helps execute daily maintenance, repairs, property upkeep, and ranch improvement projects.

*Primary Responsibilities*

* Assist with light construction projects, repairs, and property improvements
* Perform basic plumbing repairs related to water lines, troughs, spigots, irrigation, and ranch water systems
* Handle basic electrical tasks such as replacing lights, timers, outlets, and other simple components when appropriate
* Repair and maintain gates, latches, tools, equipment, storage areas, and shared ranch spaces
* Identify safety issues, maintenance needs, broken equipment, fencing concerns, and water system problems
* Communicate repair and project priorities clearly to ownership

*Grounds and Property Upkeep*

* Mow, string trim, clear brush, and maintain ranch roads, paths, trails, and open areas
* Assist with seasonal fire safety work, weed control, and vegetation management
* Spread gravel, mulch, bedding, and other materials as needed
* Help with light tree trimming, debris cleanup, and general property organization
* Keep shared spaces clean, safe, and presentable for boarders, staff, vendors, and visitors
* Support pasture, turnout, and trail maintenance as needed

*Staff Leadership*

* Help lead and support a small team of part time ranch staff
* Assign tasks and make sure work is completed properly and safely
* Train staff on ranch routines, tool use, safety expectations, and property standards
* Work alongside staff to complete daily tasks, repairs, cleanup, and improvement projects
* Help maintain a professional, respectful, and productive work environment

*Coordination With Horse Care Team*

* Work closely with the assistant manager focused on horse care and barn operations
* Coordinate maintenance work around horse care routines, turnouts, feeding schedules, and boarder use of the property
* Help keep barns, paddocks, pastures, gates, roads, and common areas safe for horses and people
* Provide occasional support with ranch operations when needed

Direct horse handling is not the primary focus of this role, but applicants must be comfortable working around horses.

*Qualifications and Requirements*

*Experience*

* Previous experience in ranch work, property maintenance, landscaping, construction, farming, facilities, or similar hands on work preferred
* Experience using basic hand tools, power tools, and ranch equipment
* Fencing, plumbing, irrigation, light construction, equipment repair, or landscape maintenance experience is a plus
* Prior team lead or supervisory experience preferred
* Horse or livestock facility experience is helpful, but not required

*Skills and Attributes*

* Reliable, punctual, and consistent
* Practical, hands on, and solution oriented
* Strong attention to safety and detail
* Able to take direction from ownership while also working independently
* Comfortable leading a small team and giving clear direction
* Willing to do physical work outdoors in all weather conditions
* Calm, respectful, and professional with staff, boarders, vendors, and visitors
* Comfortable working around horses and in an active ranch environment

*Physical and Schedule Requirements*

This is an active outdoor ranch position. Applicants must be able to:

* Lift and carry feed, hay, water buckets, tools, lumber, gravel, fencing materials, and ranch supplies
* Walk, bend, climb, rake, shovel, sweep, mow, trim, and perform repetitive physical tasks
* Work outdoors in heat, cold, wind, rain, dust, and mud
* Safely use basic hand tools, power tools, landscape tools, and ranch equipment
* Work a flexible schedule based on ranch needs, weather, and project priorities

Some weekend, holiday, early morning, evening, and emergency availability may be required.

*Schedule*

Schedule will be discussed during the interview process.

This may be a part time or full time position depending on experience, availability, and overall fit.

*Compensation and Benefits*

Compensation will depend on experience, qualifications, schedule, and overall fit.

This is a non housing position.
