Position Highlights
staff positions (50% time) for the 2023-2024 academic year. The Teachers as Learners Teachers as Thinkers: Improving Classroom Communication in Mathematics project, funded by the James McDonell Foundation (JSMF), is a 3 -year longitudinal study that seeks to improve classroom communication through an intervention focused on exploration. As part of this project, extensive data are being collected and quantified. The two successful candidates will be part of the research team and engage in a variety of research tasks and data processing of observational and free response data.
This is an Extended Seasonal Employment (ETE) position.

Duties & Responsibilities
Contribute to the development of observational rubrics that capture quality of classroom communication in videotaped mathematics lessons as a member of the code development team
review videotaped mathematics lessons and identify markers or quality of classroom communication to create a blue print for observational rubric
refine and finalize observational rubric through application to new lessons
practice applying the rubric reliably
complete inter-rater reliability
Apply developed observational rubrics to videotaped mathematics lessons
code assigned lessons
double-code assigned lessons to check for coder drift
document uncertain lesson moments in uncertainty review spreadsheet
participate in reliability meetings to address coding disagreements in double-coded lessons and resolve uncertainty reviews
Crop video segments for coding from videotaped mathematics lessons
determine in and outpoints of relevant lesson segments using curriculum materials
use software to crop relevant segments in videos
process cropped video segments by placing in relevant folders
update progress sheet
engage in quality control and review process
Develop and apply scoring rubrics to written responses that capture teachers’ usable knowledge
Communicate with study participants
contact study participants to obtain permissions for participation in research
contact study participants regarding completion of study related tasks
contact study participants regarding data collection
respond to student participants requests for help or support
provide technology support when needed
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Ability to contribute to conference presentations and publications
Ability to contribute to development of new research ideas and grant proposals
Strong team player
Ability to effective supervise and collaborate with undergraduate psychology students
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required.
Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Masters in Educational Psychology or related field.
2 years experience in developing and applying observational rubrics capturing quality of mathematics teaching to classroom videos
2 years experience in processing and cropping classroom videos
2 years experience in communicating with study participants
2 years experience in developing and applying rubrics that quantify open-ended responses to video-based measures
