Director of Farm Enterprises (SAL 09)
Summary:

The Director of the College Farm reports directly to the Provost. The Director provides the continuity between the ANR Faculty and College Farm enterprises to ensure that the student learning experience is maximized by coordinating farm operations to complement ANR curriculum content while simultaneously offering a transformative learning experience to students workers and ensuring that the College Farm enterprises meet its financial objectives.

Minimum Qualifications Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Master’s Degree, preferred
Experience required to ensure success in this position:
  • Five years’ experience in supervision and personnel management, required
Special skills, knowledge and abilities:
  • Excellent oral/written communication and superior interpersonal skills with the ability to work collegially and collaboratively in a team setting
  • Strong organizational skills and capacity to set priorities. Attention to detail.
  • Significant experience in program planning, coordination, and evaluation. Demonstrated aptitude for analyzing data and applying findings to direct the program, set goals, and make program projections
  • Computer skills including data processing and financial spreadsheets
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality

License, certification, or registration necessary:
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Required background checks
Physical requirements:
  • Ability to navigate campus/public buildings and grounds
  • Ability to travel independently by car and/or plane
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs.

Environmental conditions:
  • Professional office environment with interruptions and noise due to frequent visitors, students, staff and faculty
  • Occasional travel required for meetings, conferences, etc.
Ability to operate the following vehicles or equipment:
  • Standard office equipment: computer, fax, phone, etc.

  • Farm machinery and equipment
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Ensure that farm management practices model what is being taught to students in the ANR curriculum, particularly in regard to environmental stewardship, economic viability, social justice and animal welfare.
  • Schedule and lead staff meetings for essential communication and decision-making pertaining to the farm. This sometimes means inviting faculty to keep them abreast of farm activities.
  • Supervise the farm store manager to coordinate the delivery of products, invoicing, and other essential collaborative activities necessary to maintain supply chains.
  • Supervise horticulture activities.
  • Serve as direct supervisor to several staff members, conduct their annual performance evaluations and approve/sign off on payroll hours.
  • Review and approve all p-card expenses for the farm to ensure they are allocated to the correct account and consistent with the planned budget.
  • Develop and monitor the operating budget of farm enterprises; stay in regular contact with other farm staff on expenditures and income to ensure that the farm meets its annual budget expectations; work with office manager to ensure monthly budget reports are generated and disseminated.
  • Chair hiring committees for any farm staff positions; revise position descriptions as needed; work with Human Resources in coordinating advertising, interviewing and hiring.
  • Work with the Development Office on grants and the associated reports to provide students with engaging and relevant learning opportunities, support the farm’s educational activities, and improve farm infrastructure.
  • Meet with visitors, including prospective students, donors, professionals in ANR, visitors from other student farms, and give tours of the farm. Coordinate the use of the farm for events like field days and summer courses outside ANR.
  • Maintain social media presence for farm such as the Berea College website, Facebook, Instagram.
  • Serve as spokesperson for the farm to the media.
  • Meet with the Provost regularly to provide updates on the farm and make requests for necessary resources.
  • Play leading role in marketing the farm and its products to customers and the general public.
Other roles/duties will be assigned as necessary to assist the College in the attainment of the goals set forth and the enhancement of a positive, respectful learning environment for all staff, faculty and students.
