Job Description

SUMMARY
This position works collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students to develop, promote, and coordinate sustainable food system efforts that provide environmental, social, and economic benefits for the university.
PRIMARY DUTIES

Support an atmosphere of teaching and learning by facilitating an outdoor laboratory for class visits, interns, volunteers, community partnerships, and supporting on-site student and faculty research

Mentor and provide direction to student interns and volunteers

Plan, implement, and record crop production and food safety activities

Maintain an excellent farm site, including upkeep of equipment and infrastructure

Connect the mission of the SAP to GVSU by fostering strategic and community partnerships

Manage the demonstration garden

Oversee the community garden at the SAP

Facilitate class visits and community service projects

Coordinate with the Kindschi Hall of Science Greenhouse Manager for plant propagation

Provide inclusive access to produce through the Farmers’ Market, CSA Shares, Campus Dining, and donations

Collaborate with the Office of Sustainability Practices, the SAP Advisory Board, Registered Student Organizations, and Facilities Services

Contribute guidance for the development of new initiatives related to the SAP

Assist with writing and providing data for annual reports and other written materials

Operate the farm in a financially prudent manner

Promote a brand of excellence by listening to customer needs, effective marketing, and producing high quality produce

Support community dialogue through social media, videos, and other means

Attend professional development activities in the areas of teaching, management, and finance as needed

Responsible for supervising students as assigned

Performs other duties as required/assigned by manager

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

Bachelor’s degree (minimum)
2 seasons (minimum) experience in general vegetable production marketing in a professional setting
Experience with sustainable farming methods
Experience working with students or volunteers
Excellent interpersonal skills and attention to detail
Proficiency in Microsoft office programs
Ability to work in a variety of weather conditions

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES PREFERRED

Master’s Degree
Six or more seasons experience working in conventional and/or organic agriculture
Experience repairing and maintaining farm equipment and structures
Experience working in a higher education setting

WORKING CONDITIONS
The Sustainable Agriculture Project is a working farm and this role will be expected to work in a variety of weather conditions.

SALARY: $50,000-55,000 commensurate with experience
