Position Title: Heavy Equipment Operator
Reports to: Assistant Director of Facility Services Pay Grade: N10
Terms of
Employment:
• 240 days per year.
• At-Will employment agreement.
• Salary is in the pay grade N10 on the Non-Exempt
SAISD Compensation Plan.
• Entry hourly rate of $20.06 with consideration
for directly experience.
FLSA Classification: Non-exempt

Position Summary
To assist in the attainment of District goals through effective and efficient operation of site crew equipment in the
repair, maintenance and improvement of district buildings and grounds.
Essential Functions / Key Responsibilities
1. Operate assigned heavy equipment in accordance with all applicable laws and safety regulations.
2. Perform pre and post trip inspections of assigned vehicle and equipment.
3. Load and unload all types of items and cargo from vehicles.
4. Drive Class C, Class CDL B, and tanker vehicles.
5. Train other employees on various equipment, as necessary.
6. Minor maintenance equipment.
7. Report vehicle and all equipment malfunctions to supervisor immediately.
8. Attend mandatory training and professional learning activities applicable to position.
9. Perform other related duties as assigned within the appropriate skill and experience capabilities
expected for this position.
Minimum Requirements
• High school diploma or GED equivalent recognized by the Texas Education Agency or regional accrediting
agency.
• 3 years’ of directly related experience.
• Valid Texas Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with “Air Brake” and “Tank Vehicle “endorsement and good
driving record.
• Meet and maintain liability coverage eligibility (If applicant does not have a commercial driver’s license,
then the applicant must secure the CDL and required endorsements within 60
calendar days from the date of employment).
• CDL License Holders must register, consent, and satisfactory clear a background check of the Federal Drug
and Alcohol Clearinghouse maintained by the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Motor Carrier
Safety Administration (FMCSA).

• Must pass annual fitness determination exam per Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations.
• Must meet alcohol and controlled substance testing requirements set forth by the Omnibus
Transportation Employee Testing act of 1991.
• Candidate must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting background check. Non-refundable fee
(approximately $50.00) paid by the employee.
Preferred Requirements
• Operating the following: tractor, backhoe, loader, or motor grader and pulling flatbed trailer.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
• Familiar with asphalt paving and asphalt machinery
• Good communication skills

• Regular attendance and punctuality are essential functions of the job.
• Demonstrated ability to operate shop equipment and tools: Ladder, scaffold, small hand tools
(screwdrivers, wrenches, hammers, sockets, pliers, crimpers, wire cutters, etc.) power tools (saw, drill,
sander, etc.) drills, grinder, air impact tools, jacks, lift equipment
• Demonstrated ability to operate grounds equipment: Backhoe, trencher, grader blade, blower, shovels,
garden, and hand tools.
• Demonstrated ability to operate vehicles and related equipment: light van, seat belts, shoulder
harness, safety equipment (flares, reflective signs) and fire extinguisher.
• Demonstrated ability to operate special needs adaptive equipment: ramps
• Demonstrated ability to communicate using radio communication equipment.
Working Conditions
Work Environment:
• Computer, computer software programs and peripherals, teacher resource materials and equipment,
copier, fax, and other equipment applicable to position.
• Frequent exposure to: temperature extremes (hot and cold), humidity extremes, noise. Occasional
exposure to: biological hazards (communicable diseases, bacteria, insects, mold, fungi, etc.
Physical Demands/Requirements:
• Lifting (carrying, lifting, and lowering) – Heavy – 45lbs – occasional
• Lifting (carrying, lifting, and lowering) – Moderate – 15-44lbs – intermittent
• Lifting (carrying, lifting, and lowering) – Light – under 15 lbs. – frequent
• Occasional – climbing (stairs, ladder, scaffold, or ramps)
• Intermittent – walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, pushing, reaching
• Frequent – sitting, standing, pulling, reaching, repetitive hand motions, hearing, speaking clearly, visual
acuity, distinguishing colors, driving Class C, Class CDL B, and tanker vehicles; ability to travel
approximately 25 miles per day within District.
