WSU:Food Bank Kitchen & Produce Management Summer Associate
SeasonalJob Description
The Community Health and Food Access Program at WSU Clallam County Extension increases access to healthy, affordable food for residents of the North Olympic Peninsula. The program addresses both immediate food security needs and long-term challenges by strengthening connections between local farms, food banks, schools, and community partners. Through coordinated food recovery, farm to food bank purchasing, school garden initiatives, nutrition education, and hunger relief network support, the program improves the availability, quality, and distribution of nutritious food for households experiencing food insecurity. The Summer Associate will gain experience across the program while focusing on a core component of the program, our partnership with the Port Angeles Food Bank. Working in close collaboration with the Port Angeles Food Bank, the Summer Associate will support the safe handling, washing, sorting, and processing of large volumes of produce that exceed immediate distribution capacity. They will work with kitchen staff and volunteers to transform surplus fruits and vegetables into ready to use or ready to eat items for distribution through the food bank market, community meal programs, and partner organizations, , helping reduce household food costs and creating a pathway out of poverty for families experiencing hardship. The Summer Associate will support the full lifecycle of rescued produce — from gleaning and intake through washing, sorting, storage, display building, and distribution within The Food Bank Market. By strengthening produce handling systems and supporting walk-in cooler organization during high-volume months, they will help reduce spoilage and increase access to nutritious food. WSU Clallam County Extension partners with Harvest Against Hunger through the Harvest VISTA program, which mobilizes AmeriCorps members to develop and strengthen community food security efforts and increase access to healthy food for those in needs.
Member Duties : The Food Bank Kitchen Summer Associate focuses on managing gleaned produce once it arrives at the Port Angeles Food Bank.
